Why Comics?

More than half of the adults in Cuyahoga County struggle with reading, often due to various barriers. These challenges stem from limited access to books, undiagnosed learning differences, and a lack of resources to support literacy development. As a result, low literacy rates continue to impact children and families in some of our most vulnerable communities.

Comics at the Corner was created to address these challenges by providing culturally representative and relevant reading opportunities for residents in Cleveland’s Buckeye, Woodland Hills, and Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods. Our approach is rooted in the belief that people are more likely to read when they find content that interests them. When characters and stories resonate with emerging or striving readers, their engagement increases—leading to stronger, more connected, and socially active communities.

According to Scholastic.com, comic books and graphic novels offer text-rich, engaging, and high-quality literature that fosters literacy development. We chose comics because they are a powerful part of our collective storytelling. They inspire imagination, spark discussion, and, most importantly, meet people where they are on their reading journey.

Lit(eracy) Lounge

The Lit(eracy) Lounge is a welcoming space for readers and comic culture enthusiasts. Often centered around a theme, these gatherings aim to build community, promote book ownership, and engage people both where they live and at various points on the literacy spectrum.

Comic Book Reading Nook

Comics at the Corner Comic Book Reading Nooks are community-based spaces designed to increase access to books, particularly in locations where they may be limited, such as local businesses and social service organizations. These inviting spaces offer free comics and graphic novels for people to sit and read.

The nooks operate as a collaboration, ensuring they are not a burden to the host location. Comics at the Corner provides the comics and setup, while the partner or host simply offers the space.

Community Partnerships

We integrate Community Network Building practices into our work, recognizing that the greatest asset of any community is its people—those who live, work, play, and pray there. Comics at the Corner collaborates with various organizations, individuals, and funders to bring our mission to life.
